The Winter to Summer wardrobe swap.

Found via Tumblr.
I've being putting it off, I didn't want to tempt fate but it's getting warmer. It's time to let go of my cashmere jumpers and multi-layered skirts, I'm actually going to miss Winter a tiny bit. I never appreciate my cashmere and velvet enough during the Winter, but at least now I can wear my fishnets a bit more.

I've started to fold and store some of my items, I'm slightly suspicious of the British weather so I kept a few items. During Winter I try to make an effort everyday but in reality it's too cold, I usually wear skinny jeans; band t-shirt and as many jumpers as possible without looking like a potato. I will definitely not miss that.

I don't have piles and piles of clothing but I never seem to have enough room, do my clothes breed while I'm not looking? Anyway, here are some tips for changing from chilly weather to hopefully sunny weather:
  • Switch your jeans to shorts, if you're really daring you could literally change your jeans into shorts. Wear your jeans and chalk mark an inch below where you would like them to end, cut and simply roll up. Add a stitch or two if they keep unrolling.
  • Remove everything from your wardrobe and consider the material, weight and colour before deciding to put them into storage. Cotton is great but wool? Not so much.
  • You even need to consider your shoes, try going for a short walk in them on a particularly hot day to see whether they're appropriate. It's all trial and error.
  • Store your clothes in plastic resealable boxes, they're cheap and light weight.
  • Your velvet frock is the perfect dinner for moths. You can easily prevent them with good storage and obviously some moth repellent. Storing your clothes in a light area is a good idea too, they prefer the dark.
  • Pop a scented soap bar or scented draw liner in with your clothes, when you open it up they will smell nice and fresh.
Has anyone else got some tips?

Actually, one recommendation for storing clothes is to put dried lavender on them. Moths apparently hate lavender and, by doing this, you avoid having your clothes smell like mothballs when you pull everything out of storage.

My mom grows lavender herself, cuts it and then dries it. When she needs it she literally throws a few small bundles of it on all of the stored winter clothes, which we keep in a closet in our basement. Around particularly nice clothes that are hung up to prevent wrinkling she'll tie the bundles to the hangers, letting the lavender hang inside the outfit.

The downside is that you'll probably also have the outfit covered in dead petals or leaves, but that's nothing a lint brush can't get rid of.

@ Unlacing the Victorians, oh thanks :) that explains a lot actually. I used to prefer lavender but when I changed to rose I noticed a moth lurking around.

@ Cevennenwolf, thanks you too!

The lavender is a good idea. Unfortunately, my boyfriend and I live in a 12x16 foot box (we call it "the compartment"), so storing things away isn't really an option - there is no away. I've just ordered a pair of little black bloomers for summer, however, so I might have to find someplace to cram my sweaters to make more room in my drawer. :)

"I usually wear skinny jeans; band t-shirt and as many jumpers as possible without looking like a potato." - Hahaha this is what I do as well!

Thanks for the great tips, here in NZ we're moving in to winter at the moment so I will put these into practice next time summer rolls around :)

@ Unlacing the Victorians - awesome tip, thanks for that!

@ Becky, yeah I'm still living in one room so I have to put the boxes on top of my wardrobe. Ooh I'm bloomers for summer too ;)

@ Phoenix, I'm glad they helped!

Mmm, lavender. So wonderful!! The scented soap idea is an excellent one, too! I never thought of that.
